Best Way to Treat Acne Using Retinol

Acne Vulgaris or simply known as acne is a common condition of human skin-related disease distinguished by comedones (whiteheads and blackheads), nodules (large papules), scaly red skin (seborrhea), pimples, papules (pinheads). A recent survey was conducted by the British Skin Foundation (BSF) that aims to look at the impact of acne sufferers in the UK. Acne is believed to affect as many as eight in ten individuals aged between 11 and 30 in the UK, mostly between the ages of 14 and 17 in girls, and between 16 and 19 in boys. They found out that the heaviest impact was primarily on the emotional aspect. Psychologically, extreme cases of suicide and depression, as well as reduced self-esteem are some of the noted main effects. Another study came up with a conclusion that 7.1% among individuals suffering from severe acne condition tend to commit suicides. Though there were several research attempts made, such as formulating a vaccine against inflammatory acne, the test has been surprisingly successful on mice but has not yet been proven to be effective in humans.

However, experts say that when it comes to skin care or treating acne skin diseases, it doesn’t have to be that complicated – with a few simple steps and correctly following the instructions of your physician, you can have beautiful skin. Science tremendously adheres to its promising nature. A variety of skin care medications, drugs and also surgical procedures are highly available nowadays. One them are the Retinoids.

Retinoid or also known as retinol is chemical compounds that are chemically related to Vitamin A. Retinoid are primarily used in medicine. They have many important applications and diverse functions throughout the body including the ability to treat skin cancers and other skin related conditions.

All retinoid forms of Vitamin A are used in cosmetics and medical applications applied to the skin. Retinoid acid is termed Tretinoin in clinical usage and is used in the treatment of acne and keratosis pilaris in a topical cream. Tretinoin is used in numerous treatments such as treatment of photo-aging, hair loss treatment, suspends skin aging, removal of wrinkles, reducing the stretch marks and treating acne.

Retinoids are good at unplugging blocked pores. They reduce skin inflammation. They are commonly used and frequently prescribed by dermatologist all over the world because of its effectiveness. These medications are taking the pharmaceutical world up by storm.

So how can you use Retinoid or Retinol (Retin-A: Tretinoin)? Here are a few simple steps to use it.

1.    Take only a small amount of cream, as big as a small sized green pea and put it on the tip of your finger.

2.    Gently dab it on different areas of your face. Much alike applying a moisturizer.

3.    Make sure to avoid the corners of your mouth and the corners of your eyes.

4.    Slowly rub it into the skin.

5.    After rubbing it, it is best that you apply a moisturizer on top.

6.    Another way to use it is to take a small amount of Retinol, put it on your palm and mix it with a moisturizer. And then rub it in your face.

When first using these medications, you have to start using them 2-3 times a week and gradually work yourself up into every night. You have to remember that when using these medications, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun. So make sure that you’re using a proper sun protection. Be cautious, though, if you feel that your skin is irritated or getting too red, immediately stop using it a few days and give yourself a break. And don’t use any retinol products during pregnancy.

Is is effective?

Retinol is rich in beta-carotene. The human body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A. All retinoid forms of vitamin A are used in cosmetic and medical applications to the skin. It is usually termed as Tretinoin is used in the acne treatment. It boosts collagen to reduce fine lines and accelerate cell turnover take discoloration away and promote a healthy smooth skin. In relation to acne, vitamin A is essential for a healthy immune system and healthy skin. The best way to treat acne using retinol is to do it the natural way, take that in beta carotene in your body.

Where can you find retinol?

Beta-carotene acts as an anti-oxidant and helps to neutralize free radicals, which are unstable oxygen molecules. This unstable oxygen molecule can damage and destroy cells and tissues including your skin cells. Beta-carotene also controls inflammation, one of the most important nutritional goals in controlling acne.

Adding foods such as those rich in beta-carotene in your diet is a good start and is the best choice. You’ll find retinol in plants rich in Beta-Carotene like fruits and vegetables, especially colorful ones. The top 10 foods rich in beta-carotene are sweet potato, kale, carrot, turnip greens, mustard green, spinach, dried herbs, butternut squash, lettuce, and collards.

Taking a beta-carotene supplement could also be the second choice if these foods are not tasty for you. People who are very choosy in their diet usually results to malnutrition. Good thing there are available supplements in the market to substitute the needed nutrients.

You can also choose an oral retinoid.  As a supplement, oral retinoid helps treat oil production and inflammation. This could also be an effective way to kill bacteria associated with acne. Over the counter, retinoid can improve discoloration and even lines.

Another way of acne treatment using retinol is to apply retinol creams. Retinol creams work by unclogging the pores. The user should swab and smooth the cream all over affected skin once a day every after washing your face. Topical retinoid moreover will make your skin red or peel. This reaction is normal. This is the process of getting your skin look worst then getting it better. Use the product every third night until your body gets used to it.  If your skin isn't irritated anymore, make the application every other night for two weeks.  If it’s not dry or flaky anymore, then you can go for it every night. To avoid irritation, you should wait at least 15 minutes after washing the face to apply a retinoid cream.  Use a small amount in doing so then apply a moisturizer. Retinol creams, moreover, works slow and is less potent. It gradually converts retinol into retinoic acid, the active ingredient in the prescription creams. You can count weeks before results are visible. Today there are three prescription-strength retinoids: tretinoin, tazarotene, and adapalene. Many dermatologists find tazarotene stronger and irritate the skin more than tretinoin. Adapalene is the gentlest and is also the less effective.
